What the free edition leaves out
We have not been able to confirm enough from official sources to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.
| Feature | Free edition | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSO / SAML | Not confirmed | The cloud pricing page lists SSO only under the Enterprise plan. It does not say whether the self-hosted Docker version has SSO. | Source ↗ |
| Role-based access control | Not confirmed | The Docker docs list user administration and workspace permission controls as Docker features. The cloud pricing page lists RBAC only under Enterprise, so what the free Docker version includes is not stated. | Source ↗ |
| Audit logs | Not confirmed | The docs describe an Event Logs page but do not say which edition includes it. | Source ↗ |
| Multi-user / teams | Free | The Docker docs say Docker is both a single-user and a multi-user application, with user invitations and management; the desktop app is single-user. | Source ↗ |
| Backups and restore | Not confirmed | The Docker overview and system requirements pages do not cover backups or persistent volumes. | Source ↗ |
| API access | Free | The Docker vs Desktop comparison lists the developer API as available in both versions. | Source ↗ |
| Support SLA | Not confirmed | The cloud pricing page lists a 72-hour support SLA on the Pro cloud plan; support for the self-hosted app is not described. | Source ↗ |
Best for
Individuals who want a local chat-with-your-documents app, and small teams who want one shared, self-hosted instance with their own LLM.
Why choose it over ChatGPT
The code is MIT licensed. The desktop app is free and runs on your own device, and the Docker version adds multi-user access, user invitations and workspace permissions, embeddable chat widgets and white-label options. You choose the LLM, embedder and vector database, including local models, so documents do not have to go to a hosted chat service. A developer API is included in both versions.
Where it falls short
The desktop app is single-user; multi-user access, embeddable chat widgets and rebranding exist only in the Docker version. The Docker version needs a CPU with AVX2 for its default vector database. The official cloud service starts at a monthly fee, and SSO and RBAC are listed only on the custom-priced Enterprise cloud plan. You supply and pay for your own LLM unless you use a local model. It is a document chat and agent tool, not a full ChatGPT replacement for every use.
