What the free edition leaves out
The free tier is restricted enough that it is not a practical free option for a team. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not state it, so we do not guess.
| Feature | Free edition | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSO / SAML | Paid | LDAP, SAML, OIDC and SCIM are stated to need a paid self-hosted plan. | Source ↗ |
| Role-based access control | Not confirmed | Page-level permissions are listed for self-hosted; the plan tier was not stated. | Source ↗ |
| Audit logs | Not confirmed | Audit logging with CSV export is listed in the self-host README; the plan tier was not stated. | Source ↗ |
| Multi-user / teams | Paid | The free self-hosted tier has one user seat per instance plus up to three guest editors; more seats need a paid plan. | Source ↗ |

Best for
Individuals or very small teams who want a self-hostable, Notion-style workspace with local-first desktop and mobile apps.
Why choose it over Notion
Self-hosting is officially offered, including a free single-seat tier on your own domain, and the desktop and mobile app code is open source under AGPL-3.0. Imports from Notion and Confluence are listed.
Where it falls short
Free self-hosting allows one seat plus three guests, so it is not a free option for a team. The current self-hosted server is a commercial codebase and the AGPL server repository is archived, so only the apps are open source. SSO, SAML, OIDC and SCIM need a paid plan, and the stack has many containers to run.
Open-source alternative to
- Notion — AppFlowy is a Notion-style docs, databases and wiki workspace you can run on your own server or use as a hosted service.
