What the free edition leaves out

The free edition is genuinely usable, but some team or enterprise features need a paid plan. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Teams running real-time analytics, event data or log storage that outgrow a general-purpose database and want an open-source columnar engine.

Why choose it over Snowflake

The database is Apache-2.0 and can be installed with one command on your own servers. ClickHouse's comparison pages position it as a lower-latency alternative to Snowflake and BigQuery for dashboards and user-facing analytics. Its documentation covers users, roles, backups and an HTTP interface.

Where it falls short

It is an analytics engine, not a transactional database, and you operate clustering, upgrades and backups yourself when self-hosting. SAML single sign-on, private regions, compliance options and faster support response times are listed only on ClickHouse Cloud plans. The comparison pages with Snowflake and BigQuery are published by ClickHouse itself and include vendor-reported speed and cost figures.

Open-source alternative to

  • Snowflake — ClickHouse's own comparison page positions it against Snowflake for data warehousing and real-time dashboards and links a migration guide, so it can replace Snowflake as the analytics database.
  • BigQuery — ClickHouse publishes a comparison with BigQuery, so it can replace BigQuery as the analytics database, either self-hosted or on ClickHouse Cloud.
