What the free edition leaves out

The free edition is genuinely usable, but some team or enterprise features need a paid plan. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Small to mid-size teams that want a modern, real-time collaborative wiki they can self-host.

Why choose it over Confluence

The core is AGPL-3.0 and free to self-host, with real-time collaboration, spaces, groups, comments, page history, search, file attachments and diagrams (Draw.io, Excalidraw, Mermaid). It is a newer, lighter wiki than Confluence and can be started from one compose file. Upgrading to a paid edition keeps your data.

Where it falls short

SSO (SAML, OIDC, LDAP), the API and audit logs sit behind paid licenses (some at Business, some at Enterprise), which matters for company use. Business has a 10-seat minimum on the pricing page. No official hosted offer was confirmed, and no built-in backup tool was found. Compared with Confluence, the ecosystem and integrations are much smaller (not measured here).

Open-source alternative to

  • Confluence — Docmost is a self-hosted collaborative wiki with spaces, permissions and page history, so it can replace Confluence for team documentation.
  • Notion — Docmost offers a collaborative editor with embeds and diagrams on your own server, covering the wiki and docs use of Notion.
