What the free edition leaves out

We have not been able to confirm enough from official sources to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

People and organisations who want a self-hosted Git forge governed by an independent community rather than a company.

Why choose it over GitHub

Forgejo is GPL-3.0-or-later licensed and the project promises independent free software; no paid edition was found. It is light enough to run on small machines and includes issues, pull requests, a package registry and Actions CI. Backup is built in through the dump command.

Where it falls short

The primary repo is on Codeberg, not GitHub. There is no company-backed support or SLA that was found, so you rely on community help. Federation is described by the project as work in progress. You run upgrades and backups yourself. Versions before v9.0 are MIT while later ones are GPL, which matters if you embed or modify the code. A feature comparison with GitHub or GitLab has not been done.

Open-source alternative to

  • GitHub — Forgejo is a self-hosted Git platform with repositories, issues, pull requests and CI, so it can replace GitHub for people who want to host their own code. This is a replacement use, not an official claim by the project.
  • GitLab — Forgejo covers hosted repositories, code review and CI for self-hosting, so it can replace GitLab for smaller setups. This is a replacement use, not an official claim by the project.
