What the free edition leaves out

We have not been able to confirm enough from official sources to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Companies that want a full HR and payroll system they can host themselves, and that can run a Frappe/ERPNext-style stack or pay for Frappe Cloud.

Why choose it over BambooHR

The code is under the GPL-3.0 and the project says it is not priced per user, so cost does not grow with headcount. It covers employee lifecycle, leave and attendance, expense claims, performance appraisals and payroll with tax slabs in one app, and it integrates with ERPNext accounting. Roles, permissions, audit trails and a REST API are listed on the product page without a paid tier.

Where it falls short

Self-hosting means running the Frappe stack yourself; the project estimates a few hours of setup, a few hours of upkeep each month and a VPS of roughly $40 a month once email, security and backups are added. Payroll and tax rules depend on how you configure them, and whether the built-in rules fit your country has not been checked. SSO and SAML are not mentioned in the sources read. Priority support is paid. Feature depth against BambooHR has not been compared.

Open-source alternative to

  • BambooHR — Frappe HR is a self-hostable HR system with employee records, leave, attendance, performance and payroll, so it covers the same core HR work without per-user pricing.
