What the free edition leaves out

The free edition is genuinely usable, but some team or enterprise features need a paid plan. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Individuals and teams who want a small, easy-to-run self-hosted Git platform, usually a single container.

Why choose it over GitHub

The code is MIT licensed and the basic install is one container with SQLite, so it is cheap to run. Organizations, teams and per-repository permissions are in the open source version. A hosted Gitea Cloud and a paid Enterprise self-hosted edition exist if you later want vendor support.

Where it falls short

The pricing page puts SAML SSO, audit logs and SLA support only in the paid Enterprise edition. Gitea Cloud pricing and features are not published on the pricing page. You run upgrades, backups and security patches yourself when self-hosting. A feature comparison with GitHub or GitLab has not been done.

Open-source alternative to

  • GitHub — Gitea is a self-hosted Git platform with repositories, issues and pull requests, so it can replace GitHub for teams that want to host their own code. This is a replacement use, not an official claim by the project.
  • GitLab — Gitea covers hosted repositories, code review and CI for self-hosting teams, so it can replace GitLab for smaller setups. This is a replacement use, not an official claim by the project.
