The official pages do not say enough about the free edition to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Teams and communities that want video meetings on their own server, with no required accounts for participants.

Why choose it over Zoom

The code is Apache-2.0 and the project page says people can join without an account. It supports screen sharing, and dial-in through the optional Jigasi component. You can run your own instance, use the free public meet.jit.si, or use 8x8's hosted JaaS. The handbook includes a Developer Guide for embedding meetings with the Jitsi Meet API and SDK.

Where it falls short

A self-hosted install has several components to operate, needs open UDP and TCP ports and a domain, and scaling to many users means adding videobridges. By default anyone who can reach the server can start a meeting, so you must configure authentication yourself. Dial-in needs the separate Jigasi component and your own SIP account. The project page does not describe Zoom-style extras such as webinars or built-in calendar integration.

Open-source alternative to

  • Zoom — Jitsi Meet can be used in place of Zoom for web video meetings with screen sharing, on a server you run yourself.
