What the free edition leaves out
The free edition covers the features teams usually need; we found nothing important held back. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not state it, so we do not guess.
| Feature | Free edition | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSO / SAML | Free | The homepage lists OIDC SSO with granular roles. SAML was not mentioned. | Source ↗ |
| Role-based access control | Free | User roles and per-list roles are available (v4.0.0 and later). | Source ↗ |
| Audit logs | Not confirmed | Not mentioned on the pages read. | Source ↗ |
| Multi-user / teams | Free | Admins can create multiple system users with different roles and per-list access. | Source ↗ |
| Backups and restore | Not confirmed | Docs tell you to take a Postgres backup before upgrading and show restoring from a SQL dump; no built-in backup tool found. | Source ↗ |
| API access | Free | Every dashboard feature is available through a JSON HTTP API with API users and tokens. | Source ↗ |
| Support SLA | Not confirmed | No paid support or SLA is described; only docs and GitHub. | Source ↗ |
Best for
Developers and small teams who want a self-hosted newsletter and mailing list manager with their own SMTP provider.
Why choose it over Mailchimp
Free and open source (AGPL-3.0) with no subscriber-based pricing from the project; you pay only for hosting and SMTP. Roles, per-list permissions, OIDC SSO and a full API are included at no cost.
Where it falls short
There is no official hosted version, only third-party hosting providers. No official paid support or SLA was found. You manage SMTP, deliverability, backups and upgrades yourself. Mailchimp-style automation and A/B testing have not been checked.
Open-source alternative to
- Mailchimp — Listmonk is a self-hosted, open-source tool for sending newsletters and managing mailing lists, so it can replace Mailchimp without per-subscriber fees.
Facts checked on against the project’s official repository, documentation and pricing pages. GitHub numbers update automatically. How we verify.
