What the free edition leaves out

The free edition is genuinely usable, but some team or enterprise features need a paid plan. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Organisations that want a mature, full-featured web analytics platform on their own PHP and MySQL/MariaDB server, with the option of a vendor-hosted cloud.

Why choose it over Google Analytics

The core is GPL licensed and free to self-host with unlimited users and hits, which Google Analytics does not offer. The core keeps visitor data in your own database, and the HTTP APIs are included in every bundle.

Where it falls short

SAML/LDAP login, the activity log and email support are only in paid bundles, and some features are closed-source premium plugins. You run PHP, the web server, the database and upgrades yourself, and the page read does not describe backup for on-premise installs. A feature-by-feature comparison with Google Analytics has not been done.

Open-source alternative to

  • Google Analytics — Matomo is a free-software web analytics platform you can run on your own server, so you keep ownership of the visitor data.
