What the free edition leaves out

We have not been able to confirm enough from official sources to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Developers and small teams who want to run open language models locally or on their own server and call them through a simple API.

Why choose it over OpenAI API

The app is MIT licensed and the pricing page says running models on your own hardware is always unlimited, so there is no per-token charge for local use and prompts stay on your machine. It installs on macOS, Linux and Windows or runs from an official Docker image. A local REST API and official Python and JavaScript libraries make it easy to wire into other tools.

Where it falls short

You need hardware that fits the model you pick, and results depend on the open model rather than on Ollama. Each model has its own license, which can restrict commercial use, so check the model page before building on it. By default each model handles one request at a time, so many users need tuning. Cloud models need an account and are billed by usage.

Open-source alternative to

  • OpenAI API — Ollama can be used in place of a hosted LLM API when you want to run open models on your own hardware, with a local API on port 11434.
