What the free edition leaves out

The free edition is genuinely usable, but some team or enterprise features need a paid plan. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Teams that need Gantt-based planning, work packages and agile boards in one self-hostable tool.

Why choose it over Jira

The Community edition is free and can be run on your own server. Per the pricing page it includes Gantt charts, Scrum and Kanban boards, time tracking and costs, group management with permissions, LDAP authentication and a REST API.

Where it falls short

Single sign-on (including OpenID Connect and SAML) is an Enterprise add-on, as are LDAP user and group sync, some Gantt and custom field features, and multiple active sprints. Paid plans have minimum user counts. Audit logs were not found on the pages read. Full backup tooling exists only for DEB/RPM installs; Docker installs rely on manual dumps. Running it needs a server with a PostgreSQL database and is heavier than a simple task tool. A feature comparison with Jira was not done.

Open-source alternative to

  • Jira — OpenProject is a self-hostable project management tool with work packages, Scrum/Kanban boards and Gantt planning, so teams can use it instead of Jira.
  • Microsoft Project — OpenProject includes Gantt-based project planning that can run on your own server.
