What the free edition leaves out
We have not been able to confirm enough from official sources to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.
| Feature | Free edition | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSO / SAML | Paid | The Enterprise page lists SSO with SAML and OAuth 2.0 identity providers as an Enterprise feature. Pricing and exact plan terms are not shown. | Source ↗ |
| Role-based access control | Free | Docs describe access control configurable at document, field and operation level, as part of the core framework. | Source ↗ |
| Audit logs | Not confirmed | The Enterprise page mentions an audit log and rollback, but does not say whether it is Enterprise-only. | Source ↗ |
| Multi-user / teams | Free | A full auth system with users is part of the core framework; no user limit was found. | Source ↗ |
| Backups and restore | Not confirmed | Backups are not mentioned in the deployment docs; data lives in your own database. | Source ↗ |
| API access | Free | REST, GraphQL and direct Node.js database APIs are generated from the config. | Source ↗ |
| Support SLA | Not confirmed | The Enterprise page mentions dedicated engineering support in the demo call description. No support tiers or SLA are described. Community support is via Discord. | Source ↗ |
Best for
TypeScript and Next.js developers who want a CMS that lives inside their own app and database.
Why choose it over Contentful
The code is MIT licensed and self-hostable, and it installs into a Next.js project rather than running as a separate service. Access control, auth and REST, GraphQL and Node.js APIs are part of the core framework.
Where it falls short
The Enterprise page lists SSO, publishing workflows, a visual editor and AI features as Enterprise offerings, and it is not clear from the official pages which of these are paid versus available in the open-source code. It is aimed at developers: content structure is defined in code. Payload Cloud is not an option for new projects at the moment; the cloud page says new deployments are paused. Self-hosting means you run the database, file storage and backups yourself. Comparison with Contentful or other hosted CMSs has not been done.
Open-source alternative to
- Contentful — Replacement use, not an official claim: Payload is a self-hosted headless CMS, so it can stand in for a hosted headless CMS such as Contentful.
