Best for

Design teams who want an open-source Figma-style tool they can host themselves, especially teams that hand work to developers.

Why choose it over Figma

The code is MPL-2.0 licensed and you can self-host it with Docker, so your design files stay on your own infrastructure. The pricing page says the same core features are included with every plan and that the project is open source. Designs use SVG, which developers can read directly.

Where it falls short

Self-hosting means you run PostgreSQL, the backend and upgrades yourself. SSO is shown on the pricing page only for the Enterprise and Private Server plans, and SAML is not mentioned in the self-hosting docs. Support is listed as enterprise-grade only on the Private Server plan.

Open-source alternative to

  • Figma — Penpot is a collaborative interface design and prototyping tool you can host yourself, so it can replace Figma for design teams. This is a replacement use, not an official claim by the project.
