What the free edition leaves out
Scroll sideways to view all columns →The free edition is genuinely usable, but some team or enterprise features need a paid plan. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.
| Feature | Free edition | Details | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSO / SAML | Paid | The self-hosting disclaimer says self-hosting excludes the Teams and Enterprise plan features such as SSO enforcement, SAML, RBAC and audit logs. | Source ↗ |
| Role-based access control | Paid | The same disclaimer lists RBAC among Teams and Enterprise plan features that self-hosting excludes. The pricing page lists custom roles and project permissions in a platform package. | Source ↗ |
| Audit logs | Paid | The same disclaimer lists audit logs among Teams and Enterprise plan features that self-hosting excludes. | Source ↗ |
| Multi-user / teams | Not confirmed | Not described on the pages read. | – |
| Backups and restore | Not confirmed | Not described on the pages read. | – |
| API access | Not confirmed | Not described on the pages read. | – |
| Support SLA | Not confirmed | The disclaimer says self-hosted customers cannot receive commercial support from PostHog and that tickets are not answered. | Source ↗ |
Best for
Product and engineering teams that want analytics, replay and feature flags in one tool, mostly on PostHog Cloud.
Why choose it over Mixpanel
The repository is MIT licensed apart from the ee directory, and a free Docker deployment is available if you want the data on your own server. One product covers analytics, session replay, feature flags and surveys, so you do not stitch several tools together.
Where it falls short
PostHog's own disclaimer says everything runs on one machine, is unlikely to scale past a couple of hundred thousand events, and that paid-plan features are Cloud-only. SSO enforcement, SAML, RBAC and audit logs are excluded from self-hosting, and PostHog gives no support for self-hosted instances. For most companies the project itself recommends PostHog Cloud.
Open-source alternative to
- Mixpanel — PostHog can replace Mixpanel for product analytics such as events, funnels and retention.
- Amplitude — PostHog can replace Amplitude for product analytics and experiments.
