What the free edition leaves out

The official pages do not say enough about the free edition to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Teams that want error tracking with their own data on their own server and accept a source-available license.

Why choose it over Datadog

The code is public and you can run it for internal use, so error data stays on your servers. The self-hosted docs describe built-in SAML2 sign-in and a partial backup export.

Where it falls short

The license is Functional Source License, not an OSI-approved open-source license, and it bars offering the software as a competing commercial service. The self-hosted docs list a minimum of 16 GB RAM, state no guarantees or dedicated support, and say Seer and other AI features are not included because they are closed source. They also list limited iOS symbolication, and no spike protection or billing system.

Self-hostable alternative to

  • Datadog — Sentry tracks errors and performance in applications, which overlaps with parts of Datadog.
