What the free edition leaves out

The official pages do not say enough about the free edition to give a verdict. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

People who want to keep folders in sync across their own computers and servers without handing files to a third-party cloud.

Why choose it over Dropbox

The site says none of your data is stored anywhere other than on your own computers and there is no central server. Source code is on GitHub under MPL-2.0, and it runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris and OpenBSD.

Where it falls short

Devices find each other through public discovery and relay servers unless you run your own, and two devices only sync while both are online, since there is no central copy.

Open-source alternative to

  • Dropbox — Syncthing keeps folders in sync across devices, which overlaps with Dropbox.
