What the free edition leaves out

The free edition is genuinely usable, but some team or enterprise features need a paid plan. “Not confirmed” means the official pages we read did not say, so we do not guess.

Best for

Individuals and small teams who want a light, self-hosted task manager with list, Kanban, Gantt and table views.

Why choose it over Todoist

It is open source under AGPL-3.0 and, per the pricing page, self-hosting is free for personal or company use with the core features included. The project says the core covers views, teams, shared projects, CalDAV and imports from Todoist, Trello and Microsoft To-Do. A Docker container with SQLite is enough to start, and OpenID Connect login is documented without an edition restriction.

Where it falls short

Audit logs, an admin panel and time tracking sit in the paid Vikunja Pro add-on, which is in private beta. It is a task manager rather than a full project-planning suite, and a feature comparison with Todoist or Trello was not done. Backups are manual database and file copies. There is no SAML support in the pages read. You manage updates and backups yourself unless you pay for Vikunja Cloud.

Open-source alternative to

  • Todoist — Vikunja is a self-hostable task manager with lists, reminders, labels and filters, and it can import from Todoist.
  • Trello — Vikunja offers Kanban views of projects and can import from Trello, and it can run on your own server.
